South Whidbey Hearts & Hammers (SWH&H) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping folks stay in their homes when they are not able to make necessary repairs themselves. Our annual all-volunteer Workday is the first Saturday of May when about 350 volunteers will help rehab approximately 30 homes on South Whidbey. Throughout the year, our H.E.A.R.T. program assists South Whidbey neighbors in need.

We need volunteers with a wide range of skills, including:

  • Painters
  • Plumbers
  • Electricians
  • Carpenters
  • Cooks & Kitchen Help
  • Yard Workers
    & Gardeners
  • Willing Laborers
  • Trucks & Drivers
  • Wood Splitters

Workday Schedule, Rain or Shine!

7:45 am

Everyone gathers at the South Whidbey High School
5675 Maxwelton Road for coffee, tea and morning munchies. You will meet your House Captain and team members, sign WAIVER FORMS and go over SAFETY guidelines.

9:00–4:00 pm

At the worksite! Bring a SACK LUNCH and SAFETY equipment, such as safety goggles, gloves, hard hats and protective shoes.

5:30 pm

Volunteers and homeowner families gather again at the High School for a DELICIOUS dinner prepared by volunteers.

All are welcome from age 12–112!

Unfortunately, we can’t allow anyone under 12 to volunteer. Participants who are 12–15 years old with a medical release may work with their parents only. Participants 16–17 years old need the medical release and written parental permission. For anyone under age 18, please download and print the release form below. Without the release, House Captains are unable to let minors work.

Childcare
Childcare can be provided for up to 25 children with advance notice. Email Liz@icwhidbey.org for details.

Home Emergency Action Repair Team (H.E.A.R.T.)

The South Whidbey Home Emergency Action Repair Team (H.E.A.R.T.) is a group of South Whidbey Hearts & Hammers (SWH&H) volunteers who offer help throughout the year. This program focuses on small projects that one or two volunteers can complete. These are also projects that will correct a safety or immediate health issue.
If you’re a homeowner in need of assistance and have an emergency need that cannot wait for the May Workday event, please contact us.

If you’re looking to volunteer for Hearts & Hammers in other parts of the island, here are links to those organizations.
